You know how when you meet somebody new you are so curious about this person that you do everything you can to find out all possible information? What I’m about to tell you can only be between you and me, of course you are the internet so what’s the point? But anyways here it goes… I go and check out his sign! Is one of those things I’ve done ever since I can remember, I find out the guy’s sign and I look up the description online. Occasionally, ok maybe every other day when I check my horoscope I check his, I try to adapt it to what’s happening between us, I do the compatibility sign thing, I know pathetic ha? I know it is but you know what to me it isn’t I must confess, these sorts of stuff is what reminds me I’m not so old after all, if I did it back when I was 15 and I still do it on the verge of 30 that means I’m not growing up so fast (bear with me this turning 30 is taking a toll on me)
I guess my reasoning for it is not that I believe so much in the horoscopes or astrology, is true that all descriptions of Libra can define me pretty well but the truth is that maybe it means I’m interested and I want to know more. Sometimes it takes a lot of time for a guy to open up to you, if he ever really does entirely. It’s crazy that some of us can be physical with another person and not let the other one see who we truly are. You are practically one when your bodies are naked against each other, yet you know nothing about one another.
How much you can truly protect your heart from catching feelings in situations like this? You talk to a person and instantly things turn sexual, before anybody gets the wrong idea you both make sure to let the other person know that neither of you is looking to get involve in a relationship or anything serious for that matter, so that you are clear this (whatever it is that you are doing) has no where to go other than sex. Then you embark in this affair (to call it something); and as long as the sex is great and no “real life” facts get into it, everything will be running smoothly. The moment you start wanting more you put your mental and heart heath at risk.
I say don’t go online checking their horoscope, don’t ask too many questions, stop them when they try to tell you how much they hate their job or their goals in life; because before you know it you’ll start realizing that this person is a human being with a past just like you, with issues, interesting, smart and a perfect candidate a least for a shot at something real. Getting to know each other would just screw everything up...
And I just have a few questions left, what’s everything? What’s it to screw up? There was nothing in the first place was there? It’s all this “gray area” where no black or white are defined; and what’s the point of that, really? No drama. Where’s the fun in that?
As much as I say I want nothing serious, and I’m not ready for a relationship, the truth is I’m always curious and I can’t help it, so my hearth is permanently in danger and masochist or not, I admit, I like it.

Remember to introduce yourself
Me: I am not good at this!
La Peque: Why?
Me: I managed to make the guy come sit right next to me, have perfectly funny, smart, witty conversation, I give him my name and I get his, for Christ sake I find out he’s a Civil Engineer and yet I do not give him my number! Arrrrgh!
La Peque: What, why??
Me: I don’t know!! I had my business card right in front of me, on first zipper of my bag that was seating right on top of my lap, am I brained damaged or what?
La Peque: Definitely, and that’s it! Tomorrow you stay late at work, so that you can catch the exact same bus, you are giving this guy your number I don’t care if you have to stay late every night until you see him again, I don’t want to hear this BS again!!!
Me: eeerrr OK totally!
The story of how I met this guy is actually kind of funny, we had bumped into each other twice on the bus home, the thing is that both times I had done the same thing to him, he was seating on the aisle seat and window one was empty, I had made him stand up so that I could get the window seat. See, we both know a big secret that short people don’t find as important as we do; on that row of seats, there is more leg room than everywhere else on the bus. So the second time around I did the same thing he smiled at me, I was kind of embarrassed by this so I said:
Me: Sorry, more leg room…
Him: I’m not smiling because of that, is just that this is the second time around you’ve done this to me
Me: really!?
Him: I remember you (he blushed) and I know is because you are so tall…
I was flattered, he was so cute, and the whole way home we went talking none stop, a funny very light conversation, where none of us even introduced each other, God shouldn’t I know this as a rule!? Introduce yourself, introduce yourself!
So I saw him again yesterday and as you can see, I managed to get his name, not his number nor give him mine, but I will, I promise! Even if it takes me another month to see his cute face on the bus again, because I love you Peque but there is no way I’m staying late at work for a guy!! (ok maybe one or two days, just to see, hihi ;-)
PS: Feeling better already, some things just hit me harder than I would like but, pa’lante! Thank you Kish!

So this is what it feels like...
This is what a divorce must feel like, it drags and when you think the water has calmed down, some new drama arouses something new to fight about.
I was watching “Under the Tuscan Sun” the other day and I couldn’t help relating to the main character. Not in the way that she suddenly founds out that her beloved husband didn’t love her anymore and out of the blue she had to move out of their house and start a new life when she though she was perfectly happy; I relate to the after part. Our relationship deteriorated with time, and it became impossible for the both of us to survive the way things were going. None of us got in it thinking that we would fail, I though that was the one that would stick, you know, forever. I gave everything I had in me to make it work, and it didn’t.
Now it’s been more than a year since we separated, I moved out, and we kind of went our ways. At the beginning it was very hard to deal with the fact and we kept seeing each other. We got into an undefined relationship that was neither here nor there and finally ended up hurting us even more. The separation has taken a toll on the both us I guess, somewhat ugly things about each other have been unveiled, and the person I though loved me the most besides my mother and sisters all of the sudden seems so strangely unfamiliar, doing things almost purposely to hurt me yet claiming still all of this love for me. It just makes no sense what so ever all of the mixed feelings your get, you just don’t understand how we are the same two people that laid eyes on each other one day and said “I love you”.
In the movie the best friend of the main character tells her “I am afraid you might be in danger of never recovering”… I feel as though I might be in danger as well, and that scares me. I could not peel myself from bed all day yesterday, I felt as though my whole body weigh a ton, so heavy with sadness, and the realization once again that we had screwed this one so badly, that I am alone in a foreign country, that I can not go back to my country crying like a little girl to my mother’s arms and with so little to show for the time I’ve been here. I though this might just be how a divorce feels like… One more fight with this person and I my heart will not be able to heal ever.
Also in the movie, the main character finds herself buying a villa in Tuscany, “standing at a crossroad” and making a decision of starting a new life there. Granted I don’t have the money to buy anything close to a hole in the wall anywhere! But silly little dreamer in me hopes that my upcoming trip to Europe brings me a new opportunity. Part of me kind of wants to start fresh somewhere else, maybe get a job in a foreign country, face another language barrier, and become part of a new culture… I guess it is time for me to make a life changing decision, any suggestions?

Good Luck Michael!

Drastic Measure
You know that Sex and the City episode where Miranda bakes these brownies and is eating them by her self, and all of the sudden after throwing them away in the garbage she picks them up again and eats some more!? Come on you've seen it! Finally she decides to throw some soap on them so that she can definitely NOT eat them... Well if you didn’t happen to catch the episode this will give you an idea…
This was me, about half an hour ago, I know it’s terrible that I’m throwing food away with all the hungry children out there, and God knows at this point I am not one to be wasting anything! But guess what, I have no will power, and I have been working very hard on a promise I made my friend Crossty. I have been waking up really early in the mornings (ok, some mornings) to go workout, and guess what after almost two months, I have not seem great results but I am seeing some, for sure. I feel great, my clothes feel looser on me, for Pete’s sake I put on shorts yesterday and I actually felt hot! Not slutty really tight shorts that show half of your ass hot, but effortlessly, sexy on a summer beach night hot. I love it!
And about that picture, let me tell you something I threw away a perfectly great walk/run in the park yesterday morning by eating pepperoni pizza half an hour before bed, and not only that but I drank wine, beer and half of a mojito! I was bad, really bad! Trust me I am not obsessed with my weight, I’m not on a diet, or eating pieces of lettuce only, I have been just introducing some more veggies, fruit and less fatty foods onto my daily eating routine; added to not smoking, and reducing drinking to a couple of glasses of red wine socially, let me tell you it’s working, slowlly but surelly. And since those three left over slices of pizza were eventually gonna make it into my stomach after all of the making up work out I did today I decided to take drastic measure, so I threw them away and put soap on them!
I think I was confused, I though that by being able to say that I’m a far more secure women than I used to be, and that I am comfortable enough in my own skin to be able to show my naked body to a men, that alone made me a hot moma. The reality is that I wasn't secure I was confortable, I kind of stoped caring about my weight and the way I looked and somehow along the way that carelessness became 'conformismo' (I guess settlement is kind of the word) and somehow all of it finally transformed into selfesteem (if it is possible).
I’m still secure, and comfortable with my body, I know I am a beautiful woman, but I know I’ve looked better, I know I’ve felt better, and now that I'm starting to see results I can't help to think, that I was kidding myself. I want to feel that thing you feel when you go buy a new pair of jeans and they fit you perfect! I want to be able to go on my trip in octuber through Italy and Barcelona and be able to walk up stairs, walk all day, go out at night and not feel like a total mess the next morning. So for that I’m making some sacrifices, and at times taking drastic measures, so for that sue me!

Attempting to explain
I have discovered I’m not a writer, I’m not good with redacting rules, grammar, spelling in either Spanish or English, but I guess that’s the beauty of blogging, is your space, your rules. I’ve made various attempts at creating somewhat a diary of my life as future treinta-añera (30 year old). I’d love to see my process, my sadness, my growth (if any), my crazy experiences and laugh at them ten years from now. So let’s see what comes out of this project and let’s see if I can keep it up.
With that being said let me tell you a little bit about myself and this whole spanglish thing I got going on over here; I am a born and raised proud Dominican, obsessed since I can remember with everything in English. I became in love with all American songs long before I could speak English. Forget it The New Kids on the Block, Madonna, Michael Jackson, they were the bomb to me! Still today I find myself listening to the radio and a song like, let’s say… Thriller would come up and I’d be like Ohhh that’s what it said. I’ve been living in NY for the past five years and unlike some other fellow Dominicans (sorry to say this guys but you know it’s true) I didn’t stay in el alto Manhattan, Washington Heights trying to recreate my old Santiago over here and never knowing what’s bellow 165th street and Broadway. I go out and explore the museums, art galleries parks, restaurants and if I don’t I read about it, I love NY! I really mean that!
I work at an office right smacked in the middle of the island of Manhattan that more resembles the U.N. and not an Architecture firm. There are people from all different backgrounds that can only understand each other (at times barely) in English. I know it sounds silly but I don’t get to practice my Spanish much and as it turns out even when you’ve spent the first 25 years of your life in the Dominican Republic, if you don’t practice and all of the sudden you find yourself talking to your mother on the phone, you struggle! It takes you time to remember words that you used to use on a daily basis, you can’t help it all of the sudden you are speaking spanglish!
God knows, I don’t mean too, I used to make fun of the Dominican york kids that went to school with me and how they spoke, now I’m one of them, except I’m not a kid and really it isn’t as bad as they were. But let me just say this, my mind can think in both languages, sometimes for some reason I feel as though my ideas flow better in English sometimes they flow better in Spanish. Sometimes I have to admit (not to say that my English posts will be less true to what I’m feeling than the Spanish ones) it feels like when I express myself in English, words don’t hurt as much, they don’t mean as much, or I guess I should say they don’t have the same perceivable strength (at least to me). To me is easier to say “I love you” than to say “te amo”, it is a literal translation it just don’t feel the same is almost like “I love you” kind of means “te quiero” in Spanish which in English is actually “I like you”… I know is a mess; but hey, if you can relate to any of this or any of my future posts feel free to comment or not, one thing is for sure, you are more than welcome to accompany me in my journey, please get comfortable, this is going to be a long one.
